Entrevista White Wolf

HeavymetalPT: Hello Mr. Don Wilk. First of all, what is the feeling to be back after all these years?

White Wolf: Well first of all let me thank you for this interview and to answer your question, “It feels great to be back!”

(continua)
HeavymetalPT: Why so many time between 'Endarged Species (1986)' and the new album 'Victim of the Spotlight (2007)'?

White Wolf: Well a lot of things happened after White Wolf recorded and released “Endangered Species”.
But first of all, after White Wolf officially broke up in 1987 after RCA went through a major shuffle, I decided that a move was in order and left Edmonton for Vancouver Canada. This was in March of 1988.I felt I needed a change and Vancouver seemed to be the best.
I formed a band that later became “Point Of Power”, which released a cd in Japan on the Alpha label and also in Canada on the MCA label called “It’s About Time”.
I was lucky enough during this time to actually work with the famous Bruce Fairbairn, who had hired me to do background vocals on the “Flesh And Blood” cd recorded by the group “Poison”.

 Don Wilk

A Great experience for sure!

Then in 1996-1997 I got together with Kenny “Kaos” Loney and we wrote the songs that ended up on the Project X, “Blueprint For Xcess” cd. That was well received in Japan and in Europe and the UK.

After this release of the "Project X", BluePrint For Xcess cd, I decided it was time to write and release the solo project I had always wanted to do!

So, gathering some of the top musicians that I have worked with in the past, including Steve Crane (Point Of Power) on guitars and Brendan Ostrander (Daniel Powter, White Wolf), on drums, I wrote and recorded, "Don Wolf" - Making Changes!

This cd was co-produced by John Shepp at Utopia Parkway Studios, in Vancouver British Columbia!

After that I produced various projects in and around the Vancouver area.

In 2004 my vocals were used to help a friend named David Petovar with a new project called Bitter Suite, featuring a host of other musicians, including George Criston of Kick Axe.

David will be playing keyboards in the new White Wolf touring band.

Now in 2006 I reunited with lead guitarist and co-writer Cam MacLeod, and the rest is history for the "White Wolf" release, titled, "Victim Of The Spotlight". We always new what each other was doing musically, but decided that now was the time to get together and bring White Wolf back into the spotlight.

HeavymetalPT: How did you come up with the new album title 'Victim of the Spotlight'?

White Wolf: Actually Khalil Turk at Escape music came up with the title from one of the main songs on this cd.It seemed appropriate, as many people can become victims of whatever they do. It can be life, drugs, alcohol, music etc. This was the idea of the lyrics.

White Wolf - Viction Of the Spotlight

HeavymetalPT: When did you first start working on this new album?

White Wolf: I have dealt with Khalil Turk at Escape Music now for over ten years on a few other projects that I worked on, one being Project X, Blueprint For Xcess, and he was always a White Wolf fan from way back when the band first released “Standing Alone”. I had spoken with him about possibly releasing a basement tapes type cd of some songs that White Wolf had never fully recorded, and when I sent him a sample, he loved a lot of the songs and agreed to have all of the songs we gave him, recorded as a New White Wolf release.

We started the process of recording around August-September of 2006 and had everything finished as far as the recording goes sometime in November 2006.This White Wolf cd was truly an International recording!
The bed tracks were recorded and produced at JM recording Studios, in Gothenburg Sweden by producer/guitarist Martin Kronlund and a host of musicians from there. The rough tracks were mixed quickly and sent to me here in Vancouver Canada, I did my vocals at Marpole Studios with Engineer/Producer Rob Begg, we then sent a DVD of all the tracks I did to Cam MacLeod in Edmonton Alberta, where he did his guitars and vocals at Titan Studios with David J. Petovar!

Once this was done, Cam mailed a DVD back to me, I forwarded them on to Martin in Sweden again, and there he synched the tracks up on the computer and mixed the final product! Technology today is amazing!

HeavymetalPT: Which is your favourite track in ' Victim of the Spotlight'?

White Wolf: I really love “Dreams Are Forever” off of the new White Wolf release as it tells you about never giving up on your dreams and to keep following them until they come through, no matter how far off they may seem.

Also “America (Hello Again)”, and “Eyes Of The World” are special to me.

But then again, “The Wolf” and “Price Of One” really came out “Kick Ass” once they were recorded and sound very BIG!

Should I stop now??? Ha ha

HeavymetalPT: What about an European Tour? Would you like to play in Portugal?

White Wolf: We definitely don’t want this to be just a studio project. We would love to do some live dates to see our fans again. We have a Great touring band and in fact we have a spot at the “United Forces Of Rock” festival at the Rockfabrik venue in Ludwigsburg (near Stuttgart) Germany on September 30th of this year! Very exciting.
The musicians are:

Don Wolf (Wilk) – Vocals
Cam MacLeod – Lead Guitars and Vocals
Scott Webb (Freaks By Nature, Don Wolf -“Making Changes”) – Rhythm and Lead Guitars and Back up Vocals
Russell Bergquist (Annihilator, Freaks By Nature, Dusk Machine) – Bass Guitar and Back up Vocals
Brendan Ostrander (Project X – Blueprint For Xcess, Don Wolf – Making Changes, Daniel Powter) – Drums and Back up Vocals
David J. Petovar (White Wolf, Bitter Suite) Keyboards and Back up Vocals
It is an awesome band!

We are also planning some warm up dates here in Canada and have recently done a White Wolf reunion in Edmonton Alberta where the band originally based out of back in 1984.
I have heard rumour that we may come to Europe for a small tour in the new year and we are also looking at some of the festivals in Europe and the UK for next year.

Yes I would love to play in Portugal!

Let’s do it!

HeavymetalPT: Are you planning a live album? Or a Best Of?

White Wolf: Funny you asked that question but we are actually recording the show in Germany at the end of this month, and if all goes well we may release it as a LIVE CD for Japan!

I personally may come out with a Best Of………Don Wolf cd with a few NEW Bonus tracks at some point next year, but no plans for a Best Of White Wolf yet.

 White Wolf - Standing Alone
HeavymetalPT: Suppose that you talk with someone who doesn't know WHITE WOLF, which album or tracks do you recommend to him/her?

White Wolf: Oh Wow, ALL OF THEM!!!! Ha Ha

To get a variety, listen to “Victim Of The Spotlight”, “Dreams Are Forever”, America (Hello Again), “The Wolf”, from the New cd, “Standing Alone” and “Headlines” and “What The War Will Bring” from the “Standing Alone” cd and “Holding Back”, “Time Waits For No One” from “Endangered Species”.

HeavymetalPT: Do you have another job?(yeah, you know to pay the bills and stuff like that) or you are a musician in full-time?

White Wolf: Yes I actually do, it is called raising a family!!! Ha Ha! Seriously though, I do have a job, as we all have to do in order to pay our mortgages and pay the bills etc.It would be nice to be involved in just writing, recording and producing full time, but at the moment, the music scene is not that stable.I enjoy being a “Part Time Rock Star”!!! Ha Ha Ha Ha!!

HeavymetalPT: Do you think Hard Rock is alive and well in these days? What are your favourite bands?

White Wolf: Yes it is alive and well and living all over the world in various different forms.

Some of my unforgettable Old School Hard Rock/Metal bands and records are:

Deep Purple – In Rock
Deep Purple – Machine Head
Deep Purple – Made In Japan
Deep Purple – Burn & Stormbringer
Yes – Close To The Edge
Queen –The first album
The Who – Quadrophenia
Black Sabbath – Heaven And Hell
Uriah Heep – Any of their earliest releases

The list could go on, but these were the albums that influenced me to go on to a musical career!

The new bands I enjoy are bands like “Nickelback”, “Evanescence”, “Disturbed”, and the list goes on!

White Wolf

White Wolf
: I just want to say to all of the “White Wolf” fans that it is a fantastic feeling to have a new White Wolf release, and the thought of doing shows in Europe and possibly Japan is amazing.
We have a lot more to say musically and if the fans want it, we will continue on writing, recording and releasing material for them to listen and Rock to! Thanks for all of your questions and I hope to meet you all at some point soon and possibly even play in Portugal.

Hope you like the new cd, White Wolf – “Victim Of The Spotlight”.
